If we’ve learned anything in 2023, it’s that artificial intelligence is far from perfect. To illustrate that point, we give you the story of Russian hydrologist Alexander Tsvetkov. Back in February, the scientist was detained by authorities after an AI program found that his face “was a 55% match to the sketch of a murderer drawn 20 years ago by a witness.” Tsvetkov was arrested and jailed, despite the testimony of first-hand witnesses who said he was with them at the time he was allegedly murdering two people with an accomplice…along with testimony from the accomplice he was allegedly with that was iffy at best. Finally, after public outcry, and even some reported help from Vladmir Putin, Tsvetkov was finally released…but the charges have yet to be officially dropped.
