When you don’t make a ton of money to begin with, receiving a bonus means the world. It also sucks out loud when you’re told that you have to give it back. In Charlotte, North Carolina, 225 English teachers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District received bonuses of $1,250…but then were told they had to return them. The bonuses were supposed to be paid to new teachers as a recruitment bonus. Now, the non-so-new teachers have the option to either pay the money back in one lump sum, or through three monthly installments…both options suck.
