Everywhere you go these days, someone has their hand or a cup out asking for a tip to reward them for whatever service they’re providing to you. That’s led to what’s now being called “tipping fatigue.” Barbara Sloan is the author of “Tipped,” a book that details the world of modern-day tipping culture. Her tipping advice is as follows:
- Start with a baseline of 15% at “any place that provides a service,” such as a sit-down restaurant, barbershop, spa, etc.
- Slide that percentage upwards depending on the quality of service you feel you were given…up to 25%
- Don’t feel that you’re under any obligation to tip for pick-up orders like getting a cup of coffee…unless that design they made in the froth just for you is extra-spectacular
- Then, there are the other specialty services: grocery delivery ($5 or 15%, whichever is higher), good delivery ($3 to $5), valet ($3 to $5), hotel housekeeping ($2 to $5 per night), and bartenders ($1 to $2 per drink)
- Amazon delivery…don’t worry about it
