Americans Who Live Alone Suffer Higher Rates Of Depression

Are you living alone and feeling depressed? It turns out that it’s not an uncommon theme. A new study from the CDC finds that lone dwellers report “feeling depressed” more than those who live with other people. The report highlights the importance of “social and emotional support,” and how it plays into a person’s mental well-being. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of Americans who reported living alone skyrocketed from almost five million to 37.9 million…and it seems that getting a cat to fill the void just isn’t cutting it.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Do not suffer in silence! Reach out to a friend, a family member, a pastor, anyone!
  • If you are having thoughts of suicide, call or text the national suicide prevention hotline at 988. There will be help on the other end of the phone.

Try these coping strategies if you're feeling depressed:

  • Stay in touch. Don't withdraw from life. ...
  • Be more active. Take up some form of exercise. ...
  • Face your fears. Don't avoid the things you find difficult. ...
  • Don't drink too much alcohol. For some people, alcohol can become a problem. ...
  • Try to eat a healthy diet. ...
  • Have a routine.
