If you live in a rural area, chances are you’ve been presented with this choice: hit the deer, or swerve/brake to avoid it and risk a vehicular mishap? A man in California just faced such a dilemma – chose “swerve,” and chose very wrong.
According to a post on the California Highway Patrol Facebook page, a man left work in Big Sur on Sunday, but never arrived home. About two days after his disappearance, CHP’s air division was asked to search the area from Big Sur to Monastery Beach in Carmel. A CHP airplane had already been circling in the area to respond to a different call, the post continued, and began searching the bluffs below Highway 1. About 20 minutes later, rescuers found a crumpled car about 400 feet down the side of a cliff and a man “frantically waving a makeshift flag” for help. That Sunday night, he had swerved his car to avoid hitting a group of deer, causing it to tumble several hundred feet down a cliff and eject him through the sunroof, according to the CHP Facebook post. Suggestion to the driver, who is reportedly OK after a brief hospitalization: next time, choose “highway venison stew.”
