SURVEY: 40% OF AMERICANS ARE AFRAID OF FACING CLUTTER AT HOME

Is the clutter out of control at your house? For many of us, that answer is yes and new research finds that 40% of homeowners are actually afraid of dealing with the clutter in their homes.

According to the survey of 2-thousand U.S. homeowners with garages:

  • Nearly a third (29%) of respondents admit they struggle with keeping their home organized, even though 82% consider themselves to be an organized person.
  • The mental load of clutter can be a lot to deal with, as 73% feel overwhelmed when their home is messy and that mental block keeps them from doing anything about it.
  • Almost half (48%) of those polled say the organization of their home has an effect on their mental health and 80% feel more motivated when their home is clutter-free.
  • Only 35% say they enjoy organizing “very much,” while 24% feel the exact opposite.
  • But only one in seven homeowners admit their home is disorganized right now.
  • People have an average of 25 things that are out of place in their home and half of those surveyed are putting off finding a spot for those things.
  • The most common items taking up space in Americans’ storage spaces are home and holiday decor (41%), old documents (34%) and clothes or shoes (29%).
  • The toughest storage areas of the home to keep organized are the garage (46%), closet (24%) and drawers (20%).
  • Nearly half (46%) of respondents would feel embarrassed if guests saw all the “junk” in these areas.
  • More than a third (35%) haven’t organized the “junk” areas in a few months and 23% last tried to organize their garage over a year ago.
  • As a result 37% say their garage currently looks like a nightmare and 21% confess they totally avoid going into their garage.

Scott’s Thoughts:

  • I don’t see the logic in “if I don’t see the clutter, it’s not really there.”
  • I don’t mind a little clutter but eventually I have to pick it up.
  • Clutter takes over my closets. I have too much crap for the size house I rent!
  • It’s a fine line between clutter and being a horder.
