Avid angler Art Weston and his trusted guide Captain Kirk Kirkland made a couple of astonishing catches while fishing at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas - a massive 200-pound prehistoric alligator snapping turtle and a potentially record-breaking 188-pound alligator gar. Weston hooked the ancient turtle, which put up a fierce fight before being carefully brought aboard their vessel. Then following day, Weston managed to land the enormous alligator gar, obliterating the existing record by over 70 pounds.
Both giant specimens were weighed, documented, and released unharmed, as alligator snapping turtles are considered a threatened species in Texas. Meanwhile, if the International Game and Fish Association approves Weston's catches, the gar will shatter the previous record.
