Sobering Stats On American Drinking

A study on the drinking habits of Americans by Duke economist and sociologist Philip J. Cook has some interesting data on who among us is drinking the most. After surveying 43K Americans, Cook’s data showed that the top 10% of those who drink, which is around 24 million people, “consume an average of 61 drinks a week.” The next 10% are lightweights in comparison, downing an average of 22 drinks a week. Cook also found that around 15% of drinkers end up consuming 75% of all of the alcohol sold nationwide. Cook adds that men are dominant in that demographic.

Speaking of drinking too much...

A Key Sign Of A “Functioning Alcoholic”

By definition, a “functioning alcoholic” is someone with “an addiction to alcohol, but manages to still go about their daily routine, therefore their drinking problem goes unseen.” According to experts on the subject, one telltale sign of a functioning alcoholic is the “inability to call it quits after just one drink,” even after telling everyone that that’s their plane, but then finding an excuse to stay out and drink it up all night. They’ll also highlight their ability to “pay their bills” or “get their kids to school” as proof that they’re just fine and dandy because “alcoholics can’t do that.”
