A Florida man declared war on "Big Brother" by going around Seminole County destroying license plate readers because he didn't like law enforcement being able to surveil him and others. But, he didn't get all of them, because he was eventually caught by one of those cameras.
35-year-old Eric Fiedler was arrested last weekend and charged with 22 counts of property damage, along with theft and burglary. Police started noticing missing cameras on May 6th. About a week-and-a-half later, eight more went offline. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and saw a Honda minivan in the area and a man on a bicycle near the cameras. Last Saturday, police deployed a helicopter to track the minivan and watched as it drove to six locations where cameras were installed. They then saw Fiedler take a bicycle out of the vehicle and ride up to several camera locations where he dismantled the readers using a drill. He was then followed to a residence where he was placed under arrest.
Police later learned that just days before he started removing the equipment, he was interviewed by a local news reporter about the license plate readers and said, "When you realize you’re being tracked every day going to the grocery or church or school, and you didn’t have any say in it, it’s a little concerning to me."
