Hydrants Go M.I.A.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a strange crime ring that is putting public safety at risk, not to mention angering dogs.

Cops say nearly 100 fire hydrants have been stolen from Los Angeles County this year. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department says, "Fire hydrants play a crucial role in ensuring effective fire response and public safety, and their removal can have serious consequences. Rest assured, our top priorities are the safety and well-being of our community. We are fully committed to swiftly resolving this matter and ensuring all fire hydrants are restored and functioning properly."

Golden State Water Company, which owns and operates the hydrants, says the thefts happen daily and they are responded by installing locks on the bolts to prevent thieves from unscrewing them. The fire hydrants are made of iron and brass and investigators believe thieves are selling them for scrap metal. (KCAL-TV)

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Thieves are stealing fire hydrants now? People are really sick.
  • Imagine how confusing it must be for dogs that are used to seeing hydrants on their walks.
  • On the bright side, it does open up more legal parking spaces.
  • Each fire hydrant costs about $3,500.
