Summer is the season for road trips, with 75% of American adults planning to take one this year. Deciding to hit the road is easy, but choosing where to go can be tricky, especially if you’re trying to stick to a budget. But a new report from WalletHub may help with the destination decision.

  • Their list of the Best States for Summer Road Trips has just come out.
  • They compared all 50 states on 32 key metrics to come up with the most fun, scenic and wallet-friendly road-trip destinations.
  • WalletHub rated states on everything from the number of attractions to the road conditions to the cost of gas and accommodations.
  • Based on all that, they’ve named Texas as the best state for summer road trips in 2024.
  • Texas leads the country with the number of attractions, including zoos, botanical gardens and amusement parks.
  • The Lone Star State also has the second-cheapest 3-star hotel room prices in mid-July and tops the list for accommodations and restaurants per capita.
  • On the flip side, Delaware is the worst state for summer road trips, landing in the bottom three for activities. Rhode Island is the second-worst, followed by Connecticut.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Texas may have a lot to see, but do you really want to be there in the extreme summer heat?
  • My advice: Go north in the summer, south in the winter.
  • Still hard to beat a good drive through the mountains!
