These days, renters are reconsidering what they want and need in a home, according to new research from Zillow Rentals. Fitness centers and swimming pools were once considered the ultimate amenities in a rental home, but now people are less interested in those and they get fewer saves and shares on the real estate site.
A new analysis of close to 5.6-million rental listings on Zillow reveals what today’s renters actually want:
- The most in-demand features in a rental are off-street parking and in-unit laundry.
- Homes with these get nearly twice as many saves and shares a day on Zillow Rentals.
- Listings that mention off-street parking get 85% more saves and 103% more shares per day on Zillow and in-unit laundry boosts a listing to get 76% more daily saves and 92% more shares.
- Today’s renters are also interested in amenities including pet areas with turf, air filtration, coworking spaces and community happy hours.
- Previous Zillow research shows that nearly three in five renters have a pet and rentals with pet-friendly patches of turf see 76% more saves and 91% more shares.
- Renters are no longer as interested in traditional high-end amenities, like a fitness center or a business center.
- Homes with modern farmhouse features, like butcher block countertops and barn doors are also more popular with today’s renters.
- Wow-factor features including a bowling alley and a putting green get many more saves and shares as well.

Scott's Thoughts:
- You can rent a place that has a bowling alley on site? Who knew?
- I am most interested in a fair price without huge increases every year.
- Rent has gone sky high but it is most likely not the owners fault. Local municipalities have increased taxes so much that the owners MUST raise the rent to meet tax demand and still pay the mortgage.
