Four people were arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday and charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy after a bear broke into cars and caused thousands of dollars in damage. The bear, as it turns out, was actually a person in a bear costume.
The California Department of Insurance says the suspects filed a claim with their insurance company saying that a bear destroyed a 2010 Rolls-Royce and they even provided a video appearing to show the animal going wild inside the vehicle. The department was a little suspicious and wondered if the bear was actually real. They asked biologists with the Department of Fish and Wildlife to take a look and they confirmed that "it was clearly a human in a bear suit."
The insurance department said investigators also found out about two other claims made by the four suspects with two different insurance companies, also claiming that a bear destroyed a pair of cars. Videos of those incidents were also submitted and determined to be fake. Altogether, the suspects sought to defraud insurance companies about $141,000. (CBS News)
