How To Feel Festive Without Drinking This Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for booze-filled gatherings, events and celebrations, but not everyone wants to have a festive cocktail or glass of bubbly in hand. The thing is, research shows that more adults are drinking less than they have in previous decades, and more Americans are “sober curious,” too. But the holidays can be especially challenging for anyone who’s trying to avoid alcohol altogether or just cut back on drinking.

But it’s absolutely possible to feel festive without drinking during the holiday season and here’s how experts recommend doing it:

  • Experiment with alcohol substitutes - Sure, you could just sip a glass of seltzer, but why would you want to when you could have a mocktail made with fresh, seasonal ingredients? Get creative with spices, syrups and fruits, like persimmon, or try a nonalcoholic sparkling wine for toasting, like Prima Pavé Blanc de Blanc.
  • Set boundaries and stay active - Experts suggest arriving at a party with your own nonalcoholic beverage and giving yourself permission to leave early. Be the one to plan activities that don’t revolve around sitting and drinking, like checking out a museum or going for a hike, but still make you feel like you’re celebrating and doing things you enjoy during the holidays.
  • Resist FOMO - It’s easy to give into the fear of missing out when you’re not drinking and it feels like everyone else is. One way to get past it is to focus on the good in your life by keeping a gratitude list of five things you’re thankful for every day.
  • Give yourself credit … and grace - If you’re trying to drink less and slip up and have something boozy during the holidays, don’t beat yourself up. Just keep trying and remember why it’s important to you. The season can still be merry and bright, and there’s still plenty to celebrate, even without the alcohol.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • And just think how much better you’ll sleep if you skip the booze!
  • I don't drink like i used to. I can't. I would be dead.
  • I don't need to drink much. My significant other and I can stretch a couple beers for hours.
