Nearly A Quarter Of Americans Have Broken Up Over Money

  • Money is one of the most common topics that couples fight about, along with sex, chores and children, research shows. Part of the problem is that people don’t always see eye to eye about finances, which can be a big deal when it’s causing conflict with the person you’re spending your life with.
  • A new survey from Lending Tree reveals that nearly a quarter of Americans have actually ended a relationship over money. It turns out, financial compatibility isn’t just important, it’s a dealbreaker for some folks.
    • Overall, 83% of coupled-up Americans consider themselves to be financially compatible with their partners, something 67% say is very important in a relationship.
    • Not being financially compatible with their significant other has led 23% to break up and another 34% to consider doing it.
    • Those who have differing ideas about money often blame their S.O., including 38% who say their partner overspends, 34% who say theirs doesn’t manage money well and 30% who feel their partner doesn’t save enough.
    • Younger Americans are more likely to bicker over money. While 19% of respondents of all ages frequently still fight about finances, that number jumps to 27% for millennials and 25% for Gen Z.
    • Part of the problem may come down to communication. Only two-thirds (66%) say they frequently discuss finances with their partner and 29% say they rarely do.
    • Gen Xers are the most likely to feel they’re not financially compatible with their partners, with 24% saying they’re not, compared to 16% of baby boomers, 15% of millennials and just 11% of Gen Z.

  • Scott's Thoughts:
    • Well, if they’re supposed to be paying the credit card bill every month, but you find out they’re shopping or gaming with the money instead, maybe they need to be dumped!
    • Relationships are different for different people. One person may have more money while the other person is better at taking care of things.
    • No secrets. Share everything!
