A smart thrifter managed to pull a profit of over 760 times her investment. While shopping at a Dayton, Ohio-area thrift shop, Marissa Alcorn came across an “awful painting” in a frame priced at $2.99. Despite not particularly liking it, Alcorn bought it. After getting it home, she noticed a plaque at the bottom bearing the name of Johann Berthelsen and decided to put Google to work. It turned out that Berthelsen was an American impressionist whose work had sold for between $1,000 and $35,000 all over the country. After getting a free online appraisal, the bids came in, and within 30 seconds she finally settled on a selling price of $2,300.
