There could be one dubious after-effect of the whole tariff battle…fraudulent maple syrup. Tariff threats have made “food fraud” a cause for concern on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. Canada produces about 70% of the world’s maple syrup supply, but higher costs mean a chance that syrup imposters might try to step in with inferior and counterfeit products to take advantage of consumers looking to save some cash. Since the 1980s, various “methods and tools” have been developed to help identify cases of “maple syrup adulteration.”
