There’s recession nails, recession core, and now, recession meals!

Another sign of economic worry … There’s recession nails, recession core, and now, recession meals are trending on TikTok. In fact, the hashtag #budgetmeals on TikTok has seen a 20% increase over the last month, with videos of people making budget and recession meals getting millions of views

TikTok creator Dollar Tree Dinners has nearly 3 million followers, and she shares how to make meals using ingredients from only, yep, Dollar Tree.

Speaking of eating on a budget …

Something’s fishy … Seems people are discovering (or rediscovering) fish in a can. From sardines to mackerel to tuna, tinned fish is having a moment. TikTok’s #FoodTok is full of clips of people showing off their tinned fish plates, which are basically a charcuterie with fish instead of cured meats. Brands such as women-owned FishWife are leading the trend. Co-founder and CEO Becca Millstein was introduced to high-quality tinned fish while she was studying in Spain, but it was the pandemic that inspired her to create it for the U.S. market.

“It was the COVID-19 pandemic, and I found myself eating more tinned fish, as it was one of the few food products that offered nutrition, convenience and shelf-stability while trying to limit grocery store trips,” she says. “That being said, I was less than impressed with what my local grocery store offered in terms of species, flavors, and sourcing, and was struck by the realization that tinned fish deserved a big, huge makeover in the U.S. – and that’s what I set out to achieve.”
