Speaking of Mom...
Spending on mom … Inflation may be causing a lot of financial stress for everyone, but not when it comes to showing their appreciation for mom on Mother's Day. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will spend about $34.1 billion on gifts and celebrations, up nearly 2% over last year. 84% of U.S. adults plan to celebrate the holiday and will spend an average of $259. 74% said they are buying flowers for the special mother in their life. 73% will purchase a greeting card. 61% said they are planning a special outing like a dinner or brunch. Gen Zers are the most likely to buy gifts for Mother's Day.
Even if mom doesn’t love her gift … she’ll pretend she does. A survey found that 62% of moms have said they liked a gift they really didn’t.
What moms really want … Maybe skip the flowers and the over-priced brunch. Seems what moms really want is a clean house ... and some alone time.
Moms were asked on Reddit what they really wanted for Mother’s Day. Here’s how they responded:
- A clean house, a long nap, and to not have to see my mother-in-law this year. It always turns into her day, but hi, I'm a mom too.
- A day alone. A whole day. To sleep in. To shower as long as I want. To nap. To drink my tea and coffee HOT. To go to the bathroom uninterrupted. To nap again. To shop at my own leisure. To not be bombarded with a million questions (majority of which are "Why?").
- A day where I don’t have to do anything. No cleaning, washing, cooking. A day where I am not accountable for anything/anyone. And have beers at lunch. And cake for dinner.
- One night in a hotel to sleep … and to come home to a clean house that wasn’t cleaned by me.
- Champagne. Someone to come deep clean my house. Someone to cook me dinner while I sit on the couch with a drink.
- A day off. But a proper day off, where they actually take care of everything I do, so it's not just do nothing on Mother’s Day, and then do twice as much to catch up the day after.
- A professional housecleaning service to come and clean my house. I honestly think most moms would love this.
- Not to be needed for just a day. I took a trip by myself a couple of years ago and the absolute best part was not being needed by anyone.
- To not have to hide in the bathroom to eat ice cream or sweets by myself. My 3-year-old can hear the wrapper on a Klondike bar from a mile away.
- An hour or two of total and complete silence.
- I’d really just be excited to get uninterrupted sleep for a night.
- To feel like I'm appreciated! Maybe a simple thank you for always doing this ... thank you for being there this year when this happened, etc. Gift-wise I'd rather spend time together doing something we all enjoy as a family like a picnic. Simple but meaningful. PLEASE NO MORE MUGS! (I have 8!)
Do you have the "cool mom"? According to a survey, 70% say their mom is the cool mom. But what exactly makes a mom cool?
- 62% say it’s because she’s open and honest – no topic is off-limits!
- Over 50% say it’s because she bends the rules a little.
- 52% think it’s her great taste and style.
