About a month ago, a Chinese man with the surname of Deng started feeling pain and bloating in his abdomen. After shrugging it off as gas, or something like that, he finally decided that going to a hospital was in his best interest. The pain became so intense that docs opted for an emergency gastroscopy, which is how they found a “strange, smooth, blackened cuboid corroded by stomach acid” in his gut. When asked if he had any clue what that might be, Mr. Deng finally recalled an incident from the 1990s where he ”swallowed a plastic lighter as a dare.” Bingo! After conferring with each other, the doctors finally figured out how to remove the lighter safely and did so successfully. What’s more, when they retrieved the lighter, they tried it out…and it still worked!
