*LIST* Jobs That Seem Fun, But Are Mentally & Physically Draining

Lots of us have had a “dream” job we couldn’t wait to do, but once we started doing it, it was nothing but a nightmare. A recent Reddit post has people sharing theirs by asking, “What is a job that looks incredibly fun from the outside, but is actually a soul-crushing nightmare?”

More than 27-hundred responses have come in and these are some of the most enlightening:

  • "Veterinarian. You get into the profession for your love of animals, end up dealing with horrible owners, neglected/injured pets daily, spiraling rent, labor costs, and just general problems.”
  • "Park Ranger. You're usually managing the public’s self-destructive behaviors when they come to unleash their inner selves in the parks - And that's not even mentioning the poaching, plant and wildlife damage, natural feature removal, and forest fires…"
  • "Stagehand or roadie: Working backstage in the music industry sounds fun until you spend your 20s doing it. Low wages, inconsistent hours, rancid work culture, widespread drug and alcohol dependency, dangerous working conditions, and horrific interpersonal drama are the norm."
  • "Being a flight attendant. Layovers are cool, but you have to get to the layover first. You really see how inconsiderate, nasty, racist, sexist, intentionally ignorant, oblivious, entitled, and selfish people can be."
  • "Being a forensic scientist looks good on TV, swanning around with your hair all neat, but picking out skull fragments from the roof of a kid's bedroom or reading the thousandth story of domestic violence and sexual assault where someone has been absolutely brutalized weighs you down."
  • "Running a restaurant is not glamorous or fun. You never get a day off."
  • "I worked for MTV in the noughties. From the outside, it sounds like pure fun. In reality, I was babysitting irresponsible VJs who would be chronically late for flights and events, clients who wanted me to procure drugs for them, 12–14-hour days at event sites, setting up and tearing down, living in crappy hotels, and having to 'party' with clients until dawn then going to work the entire next day in the morning."
  • “As a comic book artist, you grow up loving characters, and it’s a dream to draw them, but the companies prey on you with crap pay and ridiculous deadlines."
  • "I was a full-time food writer for a while, and everyone always said: 'You have the dream job, you basically just get paid to eat!' Eating out all the time was incredibly exhausting, my health suffered, I drank too much, media people are egotistical and horrible, and I hated the stress that came with being a critic."

Talk Back:

  • No wonder everyone is burned out! Even the fun jobs are bad!
  • I will say, radio broadcasting is fun, but even it has its stressful days on the management side of things.
  • What little bit of restaurant work I did back int he day proved to me that it is a tough job. Managers there have to work all the time.
