Around Town - Black History Month and the life of Maya Angelou

The Lynchburg Alumni Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in collaboration with the Academy Center of the Arts will proudly celebrate Black History Month and the life of Maya Angelou on Sunday, February 18th, 2018 with the screening of the 2016 PBS documentary Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise.

A panel discussion will follow the film moderated by WSET reporter and multi-media journalist Valencia E. Jones - WSET.

This collaboration is the third of three Academy events to celebrate Black History Month. We are excited to partner with the Alpha Phi Alpha, the YWCA, and Alpha Kappa Alpha to help ensure that Academy programming is created with the community in mind. Lynchburg is a diverse city, and the Academy looks forward to sharing the history and experiences of African-Americans beyond February with more events and community conversations.

This event is free to the public. Doors open at 2:30pm. The event begins at 3:00pm. Donations will be accepted to support a domestic violence organization and the Academy’s outreach offerings.
