GFTW to Distribute Frozen Food to Area Organizations Monday

Gleaning For The World, located in Concord, VA, will be receiving and distributing a tractor trailer filled with individual family-sized ten-pound boxes of frozen breaded chicken and block cheese.

These boxes will be distributed Monday, June 1 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm to local organizations and churches who provide meals for those in need.

The food boxes come from Rich Chicks, a California-based meat-processing company, which was awarded a USDA grant as part of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which helps agricultural companies continue moving food through the supply chain to help those facing food insecurities.

Through Gleaning’s partnership with Rich Chicks, they will be placing 10 tractor trailer loads throughout three regions in the eastern United States. Two of these trucks will be distributed locally to help those here in Central Virginia.

“Rich Chicks reached out to us, and when they offered the 10 truckloads, we were thrilled. We knew this would be a big undertaking – handling trucks containing frozen foods that need to be moved quickly,” Gleaning’s president Jeane Smiley-Mason said.

“But because the needs are so great right now were able to place all ten trucks with partners who can distribute them. Many, many people will be blessed because of Rich Chicks and this grant to help feed families and we are grateful to be a small part in this national effort," Smiley-Mason said.

This is part of a $3 billion national USDA program, Farmers To Families Food Box, which runs through the end of the year.
