OH DEER, BE CAREFUL ON THE ROAD

OH DEER, BE CAREFUL ON THE ROAD

There's nothing quite as nice as a pleasant autumn drive through the country surrounded by colorful foliage -- until a deer suddenly jumps into the road and puts the hurt on your car. We're right into deer season, which means drivers should be extra careful and vigilant on the road to avoid hitting these animals. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're behind the wheel so you can avoid a deer collision.

  • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so be extra careful driving at these times.
  • Deer travel in groups, so if you see one run across the road, another may be right behind it.
  • Try to hit the brakes and honk the horn if you see one. Trying to swerve around them may confuse them and actually lead them right into the path of your car. Not to mention you risk hitting a car coming in the opposite direction.
  • Don't ignore deer crossing signs.
  • Fall and early winter the deer are in heat and make poor decisions in the name of love. (Don't we all) It is commonly referred to as "The Rut."
