Journalists in Ecuador are being targeted with bombs sent to them in the mail, and at least one exploded in the middle of a newsroom. News presenter Lenin Artieda opened an envelope and found a USB drive; he plugged it into his computer to see what was on it and it exploded in the middle of the newsroom, injuring Artieda.
At least five of the devices were mailed to various newsrooms around the country, but the one sent to Artieda was the only one to explode; several weren’t even opened. The government has launched a terrorism investigation into the bombs, which a forensics expert says contained “military grade” explosives.
