Sleep Expert Says Bedrooms Should Be “Stark & Bare”

Feel like you’ve tried everything and you’re still not getting good sleep or enough of it? It may be time to tweak your bedroom environment. According to Dr. Mike Dilkes, an ear, nose and throat surgeon and sleep expert specializing in snoring and sleep apnea, having a “stark and bare” bedroom can significantly improve sleep quality.

He recommends removing distractions to make the overall sleep experience better. That means getting rid of the TV and anything else you have in your room to create a minimalistic bedroom. Dilkes also advises not spending a lot of your waking hours in your bedroom, as he explains, “I’ve found that not living half your life in there and only using it for sleeping can be a real help.”

When it comes to snoring, Dilkes says the most common cause of it is posture and how we sleep in bed. He recommends these lifestyle tweaks to help with snoring:

  • Only using your bedroom for sleep
  • Sewing a tennis ball into your breast pocket to keep you sleeping on your side
  • Using sleep tracking apps to monitor snoring patterns
  • Losing weight
  • Not drinking heavily

Scott's Thoughts:

  • What about that one other thing that we tend to do in our bedrooms? Is that off-limits, too?
  • I have always had a TV in my bedroom. I think it helps me fall asleep faster.
  • Thankfully I use a Cpap so no snoring.
