Since 2016, California Assembly member Sharon Quirk-Silva has been on a mission to bring cursive back into the classroom. The quest went back to when the state’s governor was Jerry Brown, who signed baseball-type cards at an event, but many of those who received them couldn’t read the signature. After seven years of trying, Quirk-Silva, a former teacher, has finally succeeded. The California legislature unanimously passed the law last month, and current governor Gavin Newsom has signed it into law. Now, the teaching of cursive, or “joined italics,” handwriting will be required in grades one-through-six.
