“Popcorn Brain” And Shortening Attention Spans

Back in 2011, a researcher by the name of David Levy coined the phrase “popcorn brain.” That refers to “a person’s attention quickly jumping from thought to thought like the kernels popping in popcorn.” Recent research has shown that living online and on social media has done nothing to improve “popcorn brain.”

  • In 2003, a University of California Irvine study found that the average attention span was around two minutes thirty seconds
  • In 2012, a follow-up study saw that attention span time slashed down to 75-seconds
  • Today, a new study shows the attention span time has dropped again, this time down to 47-seconds

In case you need the reminder, this story was about attention spans.
