I'm Not Dead, Eh

It's always so hard to come home from a nice, long vacation. It's even harder to come home to find out that while you were away, the government mistakenly declared you dead.

34-year-old Nick Fatouros of Montreal returned home from a vacation in Costa Rica and read a letter from the Ministry of Justice seeking to collect an unpaid speeding ticket from his estate since Fatouros had died. He thought, "Wow, that's news to me." He says he's happy he saw the letter before his mother did.

Fatouros says he tried to call someone at the Ministry to prove he wasn't dead but hasn't been able to get anyone on the phone. He finally brought his ordeal to the attention of CTV News, which was able to reach the Ministry of Justice. A representative at the office explained it was human error and that "The Collector of Fines mistakenly used a letter template used to correspond with an estate rather than the one normally used to communicate with a defendant. We apologize for the situation." The mistake will be corrected, but it doesn't let Fatouros off the hook for the speeding ticket.
