It has to be said: If In A Submerged Car, Don’t Make TikToks

Earlier this week, we were all shocked to see video of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. This led CNN’s Kaitlin Collins to interview security specialist and former NYPD cop Bill Stanton on what people should and shouldn’t do if they found themselves trapped in a car that’s taking on water. Stanton’s first advice was to “do your homework” and invest in a seatbelt cutter and glass-breaker that you keep in your center console…just in case. Next, Stanton says to do what you can to “stay calm” and keep your “presence of mind.” Then, Stanton pointed out something that shouldn’t have to be said…but still needed to be. “We currently live in a society that, whenever there’s an emergency, what’s the first thing people do? They take out their cell phone and want to film it. No no no.” That cell phone video on TikTok won’t save your life, so you probably won’t be around to see how many “likes” it gets…and the comments will be brutal.
