Someone just paid $1.5 million for a piece of memorabilia from the Titanic. John Jacob Astor IV was said to be the “richest man aboard the Titanic,” and was the owner of a gold watch that just auctioned off for the record-breaking price. The final sale price ended up being ten times higher than the estimate going into the auction. Astor was one of the nearly 1,500 people who died after the ship hit the iceberg on that fateful night, but his pregnant wife ended up surviving. Other items sold in the auction were the violin that was being played as the ship sank and a pocketbook with documents of the Titanic’s scheduled voyages.
