Sleep Index Reveals What’s Keeping Americans Up At Night

Everyone struggles to sleep from time to time, but new research from Mattress Firm and YouGov asks, “What’s really keeping us up at night?” For the first Mattress Firm Sleep Index, they polled 24-hundred U.S. adults to find out how major cultural events, seasonal stressors and more affect our sleep, mood and overall well-being.

So, what is keeping Americans up at night? The research reveals:

Halloween

  • Nearly a third (31%) of parents with kids under 18 say it’s one of the most challenging nights of the year to get their kiddos to sleep.
  • But even though they’ll be on a sugar high, 47% of moms and dads plan to keep a normal bedtime schedule on Halloween, after all, it is a school night.

The end of Daylight Saving Time

  • We change the clocks to fall back on November 3rd and that adjustment can have a negative impact on both moods and sleep patterns.
  • When Daylight Saving Time ends, 69% of Americans report experiencing at least minor negative shifts in mood, energy and focus.
  • More than half (57%) of parents think the time change has a significant impact on their children’s sleep patterns.

The 2024 Presidential Election

  • A lot of folks are anxious about it, but 71% say they’re not likely to lose sleep over the election.
  • But of those who do believe it can impact their sleep, 56% say their sleep quality will be worse when the results are tallied.
  • Women are more likely than men to think the election outcome will negatively affect their future sleep, 63% compared to 50%.

Other concerns

  • Election night jitters aside, what could be causing any sleepless nights? Americans are concerned about personal matters like finances (63%), their health (58%), relationship problems (39%) and issues at work (30%) are the top things that could keep them awake.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Parents who plan to get their kids in bed at their regular bedtime on Halloween, how do you do it?
  • I have no problem falling asleep, sometimes earlier than I want, but I wake up extremely early in the morning now. Old man thing?
  • Changing of the clock means nothing to me other than I hate it gets dark so early!
