Whenever you fly, you’re told to put your smartphone into “airplane mode,” but do you know why? A pilot going by @perchpoint on TikTok has racked up thousands of views and comments with his simple explanation. Forgetting to make the switch on your phone won’t “cause the plane to fall out of the sky” or “mess with the systems on board.” However, if too many passengers forget to switch to “airplane mode,” some of those devices will try to connect to radio towers, and those radio waves can interfere with the radio waves the pilots of the headset the pilots are using.” It’s not the end of the world, but it can be annoying when a pilot is trying to understand directions but all they hear is interference that sounds like a mosquito in their ears because of the interference. And now you know!

TikTokers Are Embracing “Airport Rules” For Daily Life
Most of us have a routine we follow on a normal day, including things like eating three meals, exercising, going to work and sticking to a sleep schedule. But when we’re traveling, we tend to be much more flexible about all that, starting with when we’re at the airport. That’s when it’s okay to have pizza for breakfast, or have a cocktail in the middle of the day, because you’re waiting around and there are “airport rules” in effect there, and pretty much anything goes.
But a new trend on TikTok has people embracing “airport rules” every day. They’re declaring “airport rules” are in effect, which means ditching regular routines and taking a midday nap if you want to. The idea of applying these rules to everyday life sort of started as a joke ahead of Election Day as a way to cope with the stress.
In a now viral video posted November 4th, the day before Election Day, one TikToker says, “Airport rules are in effect, alright? Money, time — they mean nothing to us now. You want a drink at 9 a.m.? I’m not going to encourage it, but I’m not going to judge you for it, you know?” But the trend isn’t over, as fans of “airport rules” have decided they’re in effect for the rest of the year and beyond, for some.
- “Comfy clothes at all times. Bathrobes in public are understandable,” one person comments. “Drinking at all hours allowed. Coffee/energy drinks at all hours also allowed.”
- “I’ve had a dirty martini and Doritos so far. Oh and runts and twizzlers, and am about to go raid my grandson’s Halloween haul,” another follower of airport rules shares. “I have prosecco for later.”
- “Airplane rules also include that money doesn’t matter. Buy whatever you want/need to get through this time,” a TikToker explains, sharing that they “anxiety bought a crockpot with a built-in holder for the lid. and it’s pink.”

Scott's Thoughts:
- Anything that makes it okay to eat cake for dinner is alright with me!
- Bathrobes in public? What exactly is under those bathrobes?
- A dirty martini and Doritos is a combination I never thought of before.
