Fans of the holiday classic “Home Alone” are no doubt familiar with the small, but pivotal role that the late John Candy played in the film. What you might not know is that Candy only received $414 for the part. Taking the part was a “favor for a friend,” and his time on the set was just one day. Director Christopher Columbus says a great deal of what ended up on the screen, such as the funeral parlor story, was complete improv on Candy’s part. Years later, there were times when Candy took a few jabs about how much he was paid for work in a film that pulled in $476 million, and there reportedly was some resentment afterward on Candy’s part.
