A new study has found that the strength of your relationship can be determined by the quality of the silence. Researchers with the University of Reading found that “periods of silence with a significant other could be a sign of emotional intimacy.” Professor Netta Weinstein says that “across the board…intrinsically motivated silence was felt with more positive effect and less negative effect,” and that “relationships were closer and more satisfying during intrinsically motivated moments of silence.” In other words, if you can both shut the hell up for a prolonged period of time, and everything is still fine and dandy, then you’re probably in a good place.
