A single bottle of bourbon has just shattered an auction record for post-prohibition American whiskey. The bottle in question was a 2007 Old Rip Van Winkle from the “Van Winkle Selection.” This was a one-of-one bottle that was created “by blending together barrels which contained 15-to-20-year-old whiskey. Before the auction, Sotheby’s put the estimated value at between $30K and $50K. However, a bidding war between serious collectors ensued, pushing the final sale price to $125K. That broke the previous record of $107,715, which was the final price of another Pappy Van Winkle classic last November.
