You Probably Don’t Call Your Mom Enough, New Survey Reveals

Do you call your mom enough? While the ideal amount of communication varies from person to person, a new survey out just in time for Mother’s Day reveals a lot of us could do better when it comes to reaching out to dear old mom.

According to the poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults, nearly a quarter (22%) admit they don’t call their mom enough. On average, they talk to their mom once a week, and the majority of them (78%) confess that they can’t go more than a week without talking to her.

  • That kind of closeness pays off, with two-thirds (68%) claiming they know their mom better than anyone else in her life.
  • People feel closest to their mom when making her laugh (28%), having heartfelt conversations (25%), or just relaxing with her (11%).
  • But two-thirds of all respondents say their mom spends too much time worrying about everyone else.
  • And a third (33%) of those who are in contact with their mom worry that she doesn’t spend enough time on herself and 70% are afraid their mom has too much on her plate these days, so she neglects self-care.
  • Overall, 88% feel self-care should be a top priority for moms and 44% say they try to convince the moms in their life to make time for themselves at least once a week.
  • According to the moms surveyed, 39% get less than an hour of time for themselves every day.
  • Nearly a third of moms admit they feel like their loved ones don’t appreciate them enough (30%), and they’d appreciate more quality time (29%) and appreciative words (28%).

If moms could build their own perfect “self-care day” it would include:

  1. Sleeping in — 37%
  2. Getting her hair done — 36%
  3. Having someone else cook for her — 35%
  4. Listening to music — 32%
  5. Getting a massage — 31%
  6. Getting her nails done — 29%
  7. Going for a walk — 27%
  8. Reading — 26%
  9. Catching up on her favorite shows/movies — 26%
  10. Taking a long bath — 25%

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Take this as a sign to call the mom in your life and tell her how much you appreciate her!
  • I need to do better.
  • Moms can call their adult kids more too!
