Kids love to give mom breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day, and it’s a sweet sentiment, but moms need and deserve more. The thing is, the holiday can be stressful for a lot of moms, as they feel pressure to be happy and grateful, when they’re already burned out and don’t feel up to celebrating. That’s even more reason to make Mother’s Day more than just a Hallmark holiday that looks good on social media and turn it into one that’s all about stress-free self-care that leaves mom feeling better than ever.
“A day devoted to relaxation isn’t indulgent — it’s reparative,” says author and women’s empowerment expert Megan Dalla-Camina. “When we let mothers exhale, even for a day, we create a ripple effect: calmer homes, clearer minds, and a culture that values women not just for what they do, but for who they are.”
Everyone’s idea of self-care is different, but psychologists and mental health experts recommend these ways for moms to feel relaxation and restoration this Mother’s Day.
- Take a “digital detox” - Swap scrolling for something creative that genuinely fills your cup. Even a half a day without screens can be enough to help reset the nervous system.
- Get outside - Spending time in nature comes with all kinds of physical and mental benefits, according to psychologist Kati Morton. She says just putting your bare feet in the grass has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve immune function and reduce rumination.
- Move for joy, not exercise - Whether it’s going for a solo walk, taking a swim, or doing some yoga, do what feels good and reconnect with your body while shaking off some stress.
- Nourish the body and soul - Fuel yourself with a meal that makes you feel good physically and emotionally, breakfast in bed is a good start!
- Solo staycation or a quick getaway - Going to a museum is a good way to make it feel like you’re on vacation.
- Book a relaxing treatment - “It’s not a splurge — it’s an essential,” Morton points out.
- Create a spa-like experience at home - A little aromatherapy is always nice, and a bath salt soak with lavender and chamomile can help release muscle tension and relax the nervous system.
