Study: Social Media Overuse Increases Belief In Fake News

A new study has found that the amount of time a person spends doomscrolling through social media can directly correspond to the amount of fake news they believe is true. The first-of-its-kind published study was coauthored by Michigan State University associate professor Dar Meshi. In the study, 189 participants were shown 20 news stories…ten real and ten fake…all of which were formatted for social media. Those stories were randomized, and the credibility of the stories was rated by those taking part. Through the study, they found that people who “overuse” social media tended to be more likely to “believe fake news is true, interact with news posts regardless of if they were real or fake, and wanted to click on the fake news posts.”
