Southwest Airlines is tightening up its long-standing “customer of size” policy, and it could mean fewer refunds for plus-size travelers. Starting January 27th, the same day the airline rolls out assigned seating, refunds for a second seat will only be given if the flight isn’t sold out, both seats are bought in the same fare class, and a refund is requested within 90 days. The airline now requires anyone who can’t fit between two armrests to purchase an extra seat upfront, rather than leaving it optional. Critics worry the added rules will make travel more stressful without offering much benefit to the airline.
