Stinky Smells Causing Couples To Argue

Living in a stinky home isn’t enjoyable for anyone, but has your place ever had a smell so bad it’s caused a fight? It may sound extreme, but it’s actually more common than you might think. According to a new survey, 58% of people admit they’ve had an argument over recurring smells in shared spaces at home.

The poll of 2-thousand Americans who live with a partner, roommate or family member reveals:

  • These bad odors can come from lots of sources, and the most common culprits include garbage, pets, and post-gym stink.
  • But hobby-related fumes and storing fishing gear have been known to ignite a stinky fight, too.
  • It’s a sensitive subject for couples, as 41% of those in relationships confess they’ve directly called out their partner for their smelly hobby gear, from ripe workout bags to sports equipment and gardening materials.
  • More than half (59%) admit they’ve secretly cleaned or tried to deal with a stink, by opening a window or spraying air freshener behind someone’s back, instead of bringing up the foul-smelling passion directly.
  • Some have gone to extremes to avoid talking to a roommate about their hobby-related odor, including 48% who’ve avoided using a specific room in the house to escape that smell.
  • And 52% have even considered secretly replacing things like rugs, curtains, pet beds, and other furniture to get rid of a persistent odor.
  • A third of respondents admit there are certain smelly clothes or shoes belonging to the person they live with that they’d love to replace.
  • The thing is, the unpleasant odors can take their toll, with 42% saying they cause tension at home at least once a week.
  • It’s even worse for 29% who say the stink in their home affects them multiple times a week.
  • While some have taken a direct approach with the owner of the offending item, a quarter of those who spoke up said it created tension.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Can't say I have ever had an actual fight or argument over smells. I just fix the problem.
  • I can handle just about anything but BO. I don't want to smell stinky pits and parts.
  • The only thing worse than body funk is body funk covered up with perfume. Yuk.
