In case you had any doubt, chimpanzees aren’t human beings…and they don’t have “human rights.” Last week, Judges Matthew Ackerman, Brock Swartzle, and Christopher Trebilcock were put in the position of deciding a case brought to them by the Nonhuman Rights Project. The court was asked to determine whether chimps “are entitled to some of the same rights of liberty as humans.” With the ruling, the chimps will remain confined to the Upper Peninsula’s DeYoung Family Zoo…and won’t be set free to roam the countryside. The Nonhuman Rights Project is expected to appeal the case to the Michigan Supreme Court.
