The Most Popular Horror Movies This Halloween

Halloween landing on a Friday feels like a special treat, especially for the millions of kids who will be out trick-or-treating tonight without their parents nagging them about bedtime. But if you’re a grown-up who won’t be escorting a costumed child through the neighborhood to beg for candy from strangers or going to a Halloween party with other adults, it might be the perfect night for a scary movie.

Nearly a third of Americans (31%) plan to watch a horror movie this Halloween, according to a new poll from The Associated Press. Some will go with a classic, like “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or “The Shining,” others will choose one of the many new scary movies available on streaming services. A new ranking from JustWatch reveals the most popular horror movies Americans are watching this Halloween.

  1. The Substance” (89% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on HBO Max) - This Oscar-nominated movie is the one people are watching most.
  2. Talk To Me” (94% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on HBO Max, Paramount+) – If you’re into a modern possession flick, this one’s for you.
  3. 28 Days Later” (87% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on Netflix) – This is the original from 2002, making it the oldest movie on this list by far. Until recently, it couldn’t be legally watched anywhere online and fans are thrilled it’s landed on Netflix.
  4. Longlegs” (86% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on Hulu) - The cast of this slow-burn thriller features Nicholas CageBlair Underwood, and Kiernan Shipka.
  5. The Menu” (88% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on Hulu, Paramount+) – With stars like Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and John Leguizamo, it’s no surprise this movie is popular, but it’s the ending that really seals the deal.
  6. Sinners” (97% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on HBO Max) – Fans say it’s one of the best vampire movies ever made and it’s getting a lot of Oscar buzz, too.
  7. Late Night with the Devil” (97% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on Hulu, Paramount+) – This one’s about a Halloween special for a late-night talk show in the 1970s, so it’s perfect to watch tonight.
  8. Pearl” (93% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on HBO Max) – The second film in the “X” series, it stars Mia Goth in the title role and she also co-wrote the screenplay.
  9. Nope” (84% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on Peacock) – They say this one is best left a mystery, but it features one of the most insane “villains” ever in a horror movie.
  10. X” (94% Rotten Tomatoes, stream on HBO Max) – It’s the first film in the “X” trilogy and a pre-Wednesday Addams Jenna Ortega stars along with Mia Goth.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • No thanks, I’ll be avoiding nightmares by watching “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”
  • Michael Myers will be in my dreams if I watch Halloween.
  • Friday the 13th was the scariest movie of my life, to that point.
