t can be tough to spot AI-generated videos and images, and it turns out, it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference between music generated by artificial intelligence and that made by humans. Deezer, a streaming service based in France, recently found this out after asking 9-thousand people in eight different countries to identify whether three tracks were created by AI and nearly all of them failed.
Participants from the U.S., U.K., Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands listened to three clips - one song that was made by humans and two that were AI-generated - and 97% couldn’t tell the difference.
- The results surprised 71% of participants and more than half (52%) were uncomfortable that they couldn’t hear the difference between music made by people and AI.
- Half (51%) say the technology will lead to more low-quality music on streaming platforms and 64% think it will lead to a loss of creativity in music production.
- But it’s not all bad, as 46% think AI can help them find more music they like.
- Two-thirds (66%) say they would listen to 100% AI-generated music at least once, out of curiosity, but 45% would prefer to filter it from their streaming platform.
- Eight in 10 agree that 100% AI-generated music should be clearly labeled to listeners.
- Just over half (52%) feel 100% AI-generated songs shouldn’t be included in charts along with music made by humans.
- And 70% believe that 100% AI-generated music threatens the livelihood of musicians, artists and composers.
“The survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know if they’re listening to AI or human made tracks or not,” explains Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer. “There’s also no doubt that there are concerns about how AI-generated music will affect the livelihood of artists, music creation and that AI companies shouldn’t be allowed to train their models on copyrighted material.”

Scott's Thoughts:
- So, how could that 3% of people tell the music was created by AI?
- If it is pleasing to listen to, what is the problem?
- AI already helps us find music we like by finding similar music that we have liked.
