Remember when updating your relationship status on Facebook was a big deal? It turns out, the data behind those relationship status updates has been analyzed to offer insight into our love lives. Researchers used the statistics from Facebook to determine when people were most likely to switch their status from “in a relationship” to “single” and it just so happens it’s only days away.
December 11th - which is this Thursday - has been found to be the most popular day of the year to break up. So many couples end things on this day that it’s now known as “Breakup Day.” Sure, Facebook relationship statuses may be a thing of the past, but the harsh holiday dumping season is still a reality. According to a recent study from Flirtini dating app, three-quarters of online daters have suffered through a Christmastime split. The other peak breakup times of the year are late March and the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, which is dubbed “Red Tuesday.”
But why are so many lovebirds ending their romances during the holidays? Psychologist Rachel Harker says it has a lot to do with this being a time for reflection. “As people look ahead to the New Year, they may evaluate their lives. Any doubts or concerns about their relationship will likely feel amplified right now, prompting decisions for a fresh start,” she explains. So if your relationship is already on the rocks, the extra stress during the holiday season could make it too much to survive.

Scott's Thoughts:
- Well, if you get dumped this week, at least you don’t have to buy them a Christmas gift!
- I have never experienced a holiday breakup. Thankfully. :)
- Just before Christmas seems a cold and heartless time to initiate a breakup.
