Now that the excitement of the holidays is long over and we’ve got nearly two months until the first day of spring, the winter blues may be setting in. This dip in mood, energy and motivation is common during the shorter, darker days of this season, but the good news is it’s only temporary and there’s a lot you can do to fight off the feeling.
Try these simple, creative ways to boost serotonin and you’ll be feeling better long before spring arrives.
- Soak up some sunlight - A daily dose of vitamin D from being outside in natural sunlight can boost serotonin levels. Even opening the blinds for some light exposure will help battle the blues. And for days when it’s too cloudy to get any sun, sunlamps are a solid alternative.
- Get moving - It may be the last thing you feel like doing, but physical activity is a healthy way to release feel-good endorphins. Taking a short walk, just 20 to 30 minutes a day, can do the trick, and if you do it outside and get some sunshine, too? Even better.
- Have some fun with friends - If it’s been a few weeks since you hung out with your besties, make some plans to. Spending time with loved ones can be a mood booster, so reach out and organize a brunch, meet up for yoga, or host a mahjong game night.
- Be crafty - Having a hobby or project you’re doing can help you beat the winter blues. If you’re not into something already, trying a new hobby or class can help expand your skills and meet new people.
- Embrace the healthy side - You can’t exist on a diet of Ben & Jerry’s and nuggets forever, even though you may want to this time of year. Ultra-processed foods can actually leave you feeling worse, but fruits, veggies and healthy, fresh ingredients can naturally boost your mood and help you feel better.
- Mental health matters - Sometimes it’s not just winter blues that have you down and it’s important to reach out for professional help if you’re struggling with depression. Talk to your doctor or call 988 to reach a counselor at the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
