Starting yesterday, travelers who show up to the airport without a REAL ID, passport, or other approved ID will have to pay a new $45 fee to get through security. The Transportation Security Administration will still let people fly, but they’ll be routed through a new ConfirmID process that uses extra identity questions and can add about 30 minutes to screening. The agency says the fee helps cover the cost of that extra work and encourages travelers to finally upgrade their IDs. About 94% of flyers already qualify, so many people may be compliant without even realizing it.
