Americans Planning Cheaper Valentine’s Day Celebrations

With just over a week until Valentine’s Day, it’s not time to panic just yet if you’re still trying to figure out what to get your sweetie, but the clock is ticking. And it turns out, lots of lovebirds are feeling the same way. According to a new survey of 2-thousand adults across the country, 39% of people in a relationship confess they’re clueless about what to get their partner for the holiday.

  • One reason so many are undecided may be because of bank balances, as the poll finds that nearly half (48%) are doing Valentine’s Day on a budget this year.
    • About three-quarters say they usually look for holiday deals anyway, but because of the current economic climate, they’ll be looking for discounts more than usual.
    • But spending less doesn’t mean they’re not giving a good gift, as 87% believe that an inexpensive Valentine’s Day present can be just as meaningful as a high-priced one.
    • For 30%, romantic gifts feel most thoughtful, but more than twice as many say practical gifts feel just, if not more, thoughtful (69%).
    • The average person plans to shop for two others this year, buying an average of three gifts. But one in six are treating themselves to a Valentine’s Day present, too.
    • While this holiday has traditionally been more focused on those in relationships, 63% say it’s just as much of a time to celebrate loved ones with gifts as the winter holidays.
    • More than half (53%) are getting gifts for their significant others, but 38% are giving to their kids, and some are buying for their parents (17%), friends (14%) and siblings (11%).
    • Over a third (35%) admit their partner is the hardest to shop for, but it’s worth the effort for the 67% who say celebrating the holiday is important in their relationship.
    • Knowing what to get for an S.O. is more of a struggle for newer couples (52%) than those who’ve been together for at least three years (36%).
    • Classic Valentine’s Day presents never go out of style, as 40% love getting chocolate and candy, and 38% enjoy a dinner out. Flowers (28%), gift cards (25%) and cards (25%) round out the top five favorite gifts.
    • While more than a third (35%) plan to keep their present price range for their partner in the double digits, those who’ve been in a relationship for a shorter time average higher spending for the holiday at $209.
  • Scott's Thoughts:
    • Nothing says “I love You” like waiting until February 15th to get discount Valentine’s Day candy!
    • Money is tight, times are hard... so here's your stupid Valentine's Card. (you are welcome to use that)
    • Having a nice dinner at home and a bottle or two of wine is good by me.
