How Many Swipes It Actually Takes To Get A Dating App Match

Dating apps were supposed to save us time and make it easy to meet people, but they’ve trapped many singles in a frustrating loop of swiping. Even the brief thrill of getting a match after all the swipes often fizzles when the conversation doesn’t get beyond “hey” and you realize you wasted two hours of your evening on it.

Tawkify, a matchmaking service, surveyed 1,000 singles across the country about their dating app habits to find out just how much time they spend on swipes, small talk, and first dates that go nowhere. And the numbers aren’t pretty. It turns out, the average dating app user swipes 40 times before getting a match.

  • It’s a little better for Gen Z, who report 34 swipes per match.
  • But matching doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually meet. A third say it takes a week or longer to meet someone after matching, but another third admit they rarely meet their matches face-to-face.
  • And the time invested starts way before the first message is sent, as more than one in 10 users spend an hour or two just creating their profiles.
  • The numbers don’t get better once they reach the in-person stage. Over a quarter (27%) of users said none of their first dates led to a second one in the past year.
  • Another 45% had a date get canceled at the last minute.
  • As if that’s not bad enough, the average dating app user gets ghosted four times a year.
  • Women are even more likely to be ghosted - five times a year, on average - and they also spend 45% more time getting ready than men do.
  • All this explains why dating app fatigue is real. People can only stand it for so long, and the survey shows 75% of users took a break from the apps in the last year.
  • The time commitment makes 61% want to stop trying altogether, and when asked to put a price on all the effort, singles said it would take $42 an hour “to make modern dating feel worthwhile.”

Scott's Thoughts:

  • And this is why people hate dating!
  • I think if I were to become single again, i would just stay that way. Too old for the drama.
  • This is good information for anyone using the apps.

How many swipes, made me think of "How Many Licks" from this classic TV commercial! LOL. - Scott
