Survey: Americans Spend More On Exercise Gear Than The Exercise Itself

Being active is good for us, but how many of us are actually doing it consistently? More than 70% of U.S. adults exercise on a regular basis, according to a new survey that looks into our workout habits and how much we spend to stay fit.

The poll of 1,011 finds that many people keep their workout costs low, or even free, but some are spending more on exercise gear than the exercise itself.

  • About a quarter spend nothing on workouts, choosing exercise like running or walking outside instead of going to the gym.
  • Nearly half spend $200 or less for an entire year of workouts, while others shell out thousands on Pilates, Peloton and personal trainers.
  • While a lot of people keep their sweat sessions on the cheap, that’s not the case when it comes to workout gear, as 92% say they pay for that.
  • Nearly two-thirds (63%) spend up to $199 a year to look the part, and that’s the low-end, as 11% pay $200 to $299, 5% spend $300 to $399, and 8% are big spenders dropping between $400 and $999 on workout clothing and accessories yearly.
  • More than half (56%) admit they prefer name-brand gear, which tends to cost more.
  • Many Americans say their preferred method of exercise has gotten more expensive over the last year. That includes a third (33%) who report their workouts are now as much as $199 more and 14% who report the cost has climbed between $1,000 and $1,999.
  • To keep costs down, 45% have exercised less or taken fewer classes, and 42% have joined a less expensive gym.
  • When asked if they plan to spend more on exercise or exercise-related gear, 72% picked the exercise itself.
